Blue black

“It’s very reminiscent of a ‘90s shade of blonde (think Claudia Schiffer, Gwyneth Paltrow, Reese Witherspoon), which has already begun to come back in a major way,” says Nathan. This blonde is a nice option for those who favor a brightening frame but prefer a timeless honeyed hue to a summertime aesthetic. As far as choosing a hair color in the great city of Boston, anything goes!

Electric Copper

"While the money piece and chunky '90s highlights made an appearance in 2023, the general aesthetic will remain a soft, blurred grow-out line that stays away from visible stripey grow-out," she shared. Similar to the fruit, “tamarind brown” is a medium-toned brunette with an undertone of apricot or copper, says Ohlmeyer. It’s an ideal shade for when you’re looking to add a touch of pizazz to your usual brunette; usually, you can only see its orange tint when it catches the light. This rich brunette continues to hold sway, a warm and sumptuous shade that oozes timeless glamor. For his part, Rez created an ideal prototypal pigment for Camila Morrone. “It veers on the side of solid color with all its depth, and has a super subtle warm dimension peaking mostly through the ends to soften the look,” says Rez of the tone’s technicalities.

These color removers will gently strip away the existing color, allowing you to start fresh with a lighter shade. The Grammy winner, who launched her luxury line in February, added that she’s really proud of the quality of her products. And, seated in various salon chairs through the tutorial, she took fans through washing, conditioning and styling her locks. She said that she blow-dries her hair on medium heat using a Dyson Airwrap attachment, flat irons it and uses “an old-school pressing comb” to straighten her curly hair.

At our appointment, he was prompt and speedy, placing foils in our hair in 25 minutes flat. He promised that our color would last for more than three months, then sent us off for a gloss, on the house. He blew out our hair at no cost (a rarity in this city), and we were so pleased with the bright, carefree results, we knew we'd be making multiple bookings in the future.

Instead of resorting to harsh bleaches and harmful chemicals, professional stylists will use innovative methods that are gentler on your strands. Cowboy Copper

To get it right, ask your colorist for a single-process brunette with a pop of gloss. Along with beige and near-chantilly blonde, sun-touched blonde is destined to warm up 2024. Rita Hazan (aka Beyoncé’s go-to colorist) calls this blonde “a natural but bright and happy look which gives a sun-kissed glow to the skin.” Consider this shade your ticket to an endless summer. “[The color] mirrors the hypothetical highlights people would get if they sat in the sun for a long time, or that you see little kids with in the summer,” says Lussiano. Y2K beauty trends dominated 2023, including a resurgence of bright, chunky, look-at-me highlights. For 2024, however, highlights are warming up and melting down across brunettes.

Warm Highlights

Her maximalist accessories, which included chunky bedazzled drop earrings and a giant bauble ring, perfectly complemented the rest of the 'fit, driving home the TikTok trend. Kardashian stayed true to her signature bronzy glam while adding a '90s lip combo and super-long feathered lashes. All-over day-glo green looks sharp, but you can also try an ombre blonde with just the tips of your hair dipped in the glowstick color.

If you’re hoping for an all-over mushroom brown color, use the L’Oréal Paris Superior Preference Fade-Defying Shine Permanent Hair Color in Cool Medium Brown. Much like the aforementioned auburn brown, hybrid hair colors will lead the trends in 2024. Violet brown is a mix of brunette, burgundy and purple tones that can be customized based on your skin tone, making it a flattering option for nearly anyone. “We will see a shift from severe black hair color trends, like jet black, to a softer brunette shade that is warmer in tone and features natural hints of dark cocoa,” says Shvonne Perkins, a master colorist and Madison Reed expert. To maintain the look, she names the Madison Reed Color Reviving Gloss in Espresso ($25) as a quick pick-me-up.

With an explosion of creativity and self-expression, this year is all about pushing the boundaries and embracing unique styles. Whether you're looking to make a bold statement or add a subtle touch of color, the options are endless. Get ready to unleash your inner muse and dive into a world where hair becomes a canvas for artistic expression.

No matter if you have platinum blonde locks or dark brunette hair, adding subtle hints of violet can instantly elevate your style. If you don't want to opt for a full head of red hair, another option gaining popularity is "chocolate cherry," a rich brown with "warm highlights in a variety of reds and coppers," according to Cunningham. (Your strands might benefit from the protective benefits of Luseta Biotin and Collagen Hair Growth Serum). We crave a touch of sun-kissed color as much as the next Californian, but we told Capri that we were tired of our highlights always turning bright blonde outdoors, lightening our natural medium brown base.

Whether you’re growing out your natural gray hair or you’ve finally realized that shiny silvery strands are a forever trend, this color will help you embrace the beauty of gray hair. Strawberry blonde combines the golden blonde trend and the auburn trend in a blend of golden blonde, red, copper and pink hues. This hybrid color is ultra-flattering for those with pale skin and it’s going to make a huge splash in the new year, especially as the weather begins to get warmer. Get the red-meets-blonde hue with the help of the L’Oréal Paris Excellence Créme Permanent Triple Care Hair Color in Medium Reddish Blonde.

“Adding dimension with a metallic toner can help keep the color looking shiny longer so you can avoid frequent touchups and trips to the salon,” he says. When done correctly, it not only prolongs the look but helps maintain the integrity and beauty of natural hair. Take a cue from older generations with this 2024 hair color trend that embraces the more “natural” side of hair colors.

If you’re all about embracing your natural hair color and leaning in with the gray, you’re in luck. Cunningham says that spring 2024 is prime time for a silver renaissance. “The silver trend has gained momentum ever since the pandemic and people were unable to color their roots and hair. While bronde and reds are showing up everywhere, silver is a trend you see popping up, too,” she says. Violet is a cool tone that enhances the look of bright blonde to black hair, adding a touch of sophistication and uniqueness to your hair color.

Whether you choose to fully immerse yourself in opal tones or add subtle highlights for a touch of whimsy, opal hair is a trend that will bring a mystical aura to your look in 2024. The iridescent blues and purples will make you feel like you've stepped into a dream world, where every strand of hair reflects the enchanting hues of the Northern Lights. It's a color that captures the essence of shimmering gemstones and transforms your locks into a masterpiece of ethereal beauty. If you are ready to change dark hair to lighter, consider a healthy color remover process that will gently lift your hair color without causing damage.

12 Hair Color Trends For 2023 That Experts Predict Will Be Everywhere

As Miller notes, these types of cleansers not only prolong the vibrancy of your shade but ensure your strands stay healthy over time. “Look for formulas with naturally derived ingredients that work to balance chemically treated hair,” says Spagnuolo. Overhauling your routine may feel like a chore, but as the experts explain, it will be worth it in the long run.

To keep color looking fresh and to repair any damage to color-treated hair, she says to use a good hair mask like the Redken Acidic Bonding Concentrate 5 Minute Liquid Mask. It gives hair deep hydration and helps repair damage in just under five minutes. Dua Lipa debuted this rich, bold deep-red shade in 2023, and we can expect hella other celebs to follow suit in 2024.

Copper apricot

Luckily, there are options for every natural base color, taste, and lifestyle. (Lazy peeps, rest assured that your needs will be met, too.) From blondes and coppers to pinks and browns, here are the hair colors that will be everywhere in the new year. Cunningham predicts this glossy shade is going to be everywhere this summer. In order to achieve a shade like Carey Mulligan's, the colorist says you need to get the tone right so it complements your complexion. Y2K trends are still going strong and chunky highlights are predicted to be very popular for this upcoming season. "We are moving out of clean-girl territory, where all the highlighting is hand-painted and looks very natural, and headed towards a bolder, in-your-face moment with highlights," says Akaneya.

Caramel highlights are paired with a brunette balayage.

"Always make sure to brighten up the silhouette of the facial features with some baby lights to balance the eye color and soften the cheekbones." From Sydney Sweeney to Jessica Chastain, celebs flock to the salon for this hair color. "This is a move away from 'Cowboy Copper.' It's a few shades lighter and a beautiful color for anyone wanting to stand out. It's also eye-catching and different from all the other blondes," says Kerner. \"This is a move away from 'Cowboy Copper.' In keeping with the low-maintenance trend, Spagnuolo notes that it’s important to choose a version of the hue that best fits your lifestyle.

While strolling through the museums, he was struck by Botticelli's penchant for using real gold in his paintings of women's hair, allowing the light to capture it just right. "Can't forget the ever-so-dancing picture of Angelina with pink hair—that screams Spring/Summer 24," adds Moon. "Even Shannon Elizabeth's color from American Pie is having its moment with Dua Lipa." Ask for a conditioning treatment at the salon if your hair is dry and tired, and a gloss to finish the color to lock in that expensive sheen. If you want the most natural-looking, sun-spun highlights, opt for honey-toned babylights. If you love the idea of trying strawberry blonde but you don’t want to commit to going blonde, auburn is the perfect compromise.

For the uninitiated, vanilla chai is TikTok's latest food-themed beauty take, tied into the whole "vanilla girl aesthetic" thing. It's basically a grown-out/rooted blonde with a sandy/beige hue and neutral undertone.

"Lulu Liotta at Butterfly Loft" sounds like the beginning of a children's story. Appropriate, considering this colorist's knack for returning hair to its youthful, sun-kissed state. Liotta added a caramel tone up top, then weaved in tapering shades of amber and gold. When our own mother saw the gleaming results, she gasped, "That's the hair color you had when you were ten!" The ultimate storybook ending? "Blonde dimensional balayage with subtle money pieces is a perfect balance of soft warm and cool highlight shades throughout the mid-lengths and ends," Richy Kandasamy, a colorist and R+Co collective member previously told InStyle.

The light coppery hue is the perfect way to add warmth to your complexion. Plus, it pairs beautifully with warm blonde highlights or rich copper lowlights to give it some extra dimension. Don’t be surprised if you see it reign beyond the cool weather months and right into spring and summer.

Last year birthed the rise of cherry-cola hair, while this coming year will give way to pecan-red hair — a richly saturated, highly glossy auburn (like a hot and gooey pecan pie). “The color pairs perfectly with pale skin, while also enhancing the natural glow of deeper skin tones,” she notes. When we asked Harrer to lighten our medium brown hair by two shades, she politely refused, explaining that our hair would turn brassy red.

But like apricot, you'll need routine touch-ups to keep this copper polished. If quiet luxury were a hair color it would be a rich and chocolatey brunette with juuust a dash of hazelnut. Her strands have gone from rose gold and tangerine to, in early 2024, saturated apricot red.

By breaking down the existing color molecules, these advanced products allow for a smooth transition to a lighter shade. For this piece, beauty writer Carol Lee spoke with trusted hair experts about hair growth. She also searched the internet for top-rated hair masks for growth, perused reviews for dozens of popular options, and evaluated each on their features and customer reviews. Oftentimes, trying to make your hair grow faster feels like a Sisyphean task, regardless of how many hair growth vitamins and hair growth serums you incorporate into your daily routine. When your hair is damaged and brittle, you might find that it breaks off long before it can reach its full potential—and you’re not alone. While I’ve had virgin hair all my life, I’ve seen friends who bleach and double-process their strands struggle with this problem firsthand.

Beyoncé said she wasn’t always ‘flawless’ when it comes to her hair, unveiling her longtime struggles with psoriasis. “The Vegamour HYDR-8 Deep Moisture Repair Mask is a great option because it contains natural oils that can penetrate the hair shaft to protect bonds and deeply moisturize,” says Dr. Nathan. Another helpful ingredient is the vegan keratin alternative, which leaves hair both stronger and shinier. Kim hasn’t given any hints about what she’s going to wear at this year’s Met Gala — it’s top secret for now! However, fans know she’s committed to creating an iconic fashion moment.

Brown ribbons of brunette hues tone down the punchy red shade, but you still get the dimension and luminosity. Plus, this hybrid shade further proves the point that red hair can look good on everyone. If you love a DIY hair color, get auburn brown tresses at home with L’Oréal Paris Superior Preference Fade-Defying Shine Permanent Hair Color in Dark Mahogany Brown. "It’s a bolder take on red that can feel more exciting and more of a statement than the soft approach of natural warm reds from recent trends," she explains.

“He was recommended to us by Storm Thorgerson [of Hipgnosis] but he wouldn’t let us see it ’til it was finished,” bassist Pete Agnew Agnew says. All songs written by Manny Charlton, Dan McCafferty, Pete Agnew, Darrell Sweet, except where noted. The album cover art was designed by David Fairbrother-Roe.

The guitar centred outro just makes me wanna get out on the highway. Stand out tracks are Hair Of The Dog, Changing Times, and Beggars Day. Guilty does nothing for me and Judas doesn't justify its length but the other tracks are more than filler. I had the impression that they were a bar-room boogie band that occasionally did ballads. Even the band are unsure what Dave Roe was trying to achieve with the sleeve art of a bat-like creature with vicious teeth.

I don't remember the original having this level of power and clarity ( I might have been a fan of it did). The live tracks on that version (alongside the banter) are well worth a listen as well. This album bursts that misconception as they deliver a mixture of high energy rock, blues and ok 'that' ballad.

Track listing

The world has changed since 1975 and today that outward looking attitude and lightness of touch would sadly leave the band loosing out in a world where brand not band wins. Something that strikes me listening now isn't just what they play but what they don't play. The only pratfall to the album is possibly the duration of Please Don't Judas Me.

Original Version

The band was booked into what they described as a ultra low budget studio, and they were expected to bang out what would be their last record, on the cheap. Every week, Album of the Week Club listens to and discusses the album in question, votes on how good it is, and publishes our findings, with the aim of giving people reliable reviews and the wider rock community the chance to contribute. I can think of a few perfectly acceptable bands today who could come on by leaps and bounds if they had the courage to adopt Nazareth's approach.

The pure, unrelenting, unambiguous title track commences with the cow-bell laden drum beat of Darrell Sweet, soon accompanied by the crisp guitar riff of Charlton. McCafferty’s rough but melodic vocals provide the indelible hook along with the middle talk-box lead, all making for a song filled with infectious rock elements, which helped Nazareth become a staple of classic rock radio for decades to come. “Miss Misery” follows as a more serious hard rock counterpart to the almost celebratory opening track. This track reaches into the very heart of the album, which is mainly negative in lyrical tone but in no way meek in delivery. As a bonus, Charlton’s slide guitar lead gives it all a blues legitimacy that brings the song to a higher level, especially with his odd but satisfying guitar chime section to end the track. The one that most everyone knows from the guys.“Hair of the Dog” is the title track of Nazareth’s album Hair of the Dog.

The middle eastern melodies and mood are interesting, but 10 minutes is a bit too much. Rose in the Heather just resolves Beggars Day so perfectly that both songs should just be one long song. And then Changing Times comes back in right after the ballad and gets the party going again.

Other albums released in March 1979

But that was not to be so, because when 70s headbangers like myself heard the opening salvo of the opening tune, a war cry went forth, causing millions more to hear the merits of this fantastic album... As recorded in the pages of Classic Rock magazine, this was intended to be the last record in the Nazareth boys' record contract. The band had never caught fire, as the record company had hoped they would.

“Beggars Day” is a fine blend of hard rock, which falls somewhere on the spectrum between Aerosmith and AC/DC. Charlton supplies great electric guitar blends, riffs between the vocal lines and a good sense of melody and rock intensity throughout, with the guitar lead continuing the use of multiple bluesy guitars, giving it a thick atmosphere of pure rock ambiance. "Hair of the Dog" is a song by Scottish rock band Nazareth, released on their 1975 studio album, Hair of the Dog.[2] The song, alongside "Love Hurts", remains their most successful and popular. As a standalone song, it only charted in Germany, where it peaked at #44. The song and album Hair of the Dog was originally derived from the hook “Son of a Bitch” as “Heir of the Dog”, but changed as a compromise with the record label, using a popular phrase describing a folk hangover cure. The first song recorded for the sessions was a cover of the Everly Brothers’ “Love Hurts”, intended as a single-only release.

I'm going to keep this on rotation and look out for the vinyl. Nice one and another brilliant CRAOTW, filling in another musical gap in my pre 80s record buying hey day. Maybe I stopped spinning it because of McCafferty’s gargling Dran-O after swallowing razor blades vocal delivery. Listening this week, I was surprised to find it didn’t (completely) bother me, especially considering that influence on Axl Rose is so obvious (the majority of the time, I can’t stand Axl’s voice).

From testing headphones to reviewing albums, our experts aim to create reviews you can trust. Maybe the reason music like this doesn't find a bigger audience these days is because it's not as obvious as much of today's rock. When it quietens down it really quietens down and doesn't just pretend to by slowing the tempo. That allows the different textures of Whiskey Drinking Woman and Please Don't Judas Me to really stand out from the chest-beating warp and weft woven elsewhere.

The album was first reissued on CD in the USA in 1984; the disc was manufactured in Japan with the inserts printed in Japan. There are also remastered editions released since 1997 with different sets of bonus tracks. We kick off with the double boot in the knackers ( to keep the vaguely testicular motif going ) of the title track and Miss Misery before the cigarette lighters come out for the sublime cover of Randy Newman's Guilty. This is 12 inch vinyl put together in the most perfect fashion for the 70's rocker. All the players are magnificent on this album, with the guitar playing being especially impressive.

Hair of the Dog by Nazareth

It was released in 1975 and that riff blared out of radios everywhere, and seared itself into the consciousness of record buyers, sending the album into the Top 20, giving the band the biggest album of their career. The ring of the cowbell and the driving guitar riff made for a winning combination, and to this day, it remains the band’s signature song. Nazareth formed in Scotland in late 1968, taking their name from a line in The Band’s debut album, Music from Big Pink, released earlier that year. All four members of this group, led by Charlton and lead vocalist Dan McCafferty were members of the group The Shadettes, dating back as far as 1961. In 1970, the band relocated to London, which soon brought them a recording contract, starting with their self-titled debut album in 1971 and the country-rock flavored Exercises in 1972.

The album itself was slated to include an electric piano and slide guitar fueled cover of Randy Newman’s “Guilty”, but a last minute switch was made after A&M Records co-founder Jerry Moss heard the recording of “Love Hurts”. Nazareth's record label wasn't about to let them name the project Son of a Bitch. Thus, Hair of the Dog was selected as a compromise, putting the finishing touches on a career-defining release.[4]The album title is often considered to be a shortened form of the phrase describing a folk hangover cure, "the hair of the dog that bit you". The Scottish expression “hair of the dog that bit you” was based on a superstition that claimed if one applied the hair of the rabid animal that attacked them it would help in the healing process.

This is also the first song on album where Pete Agnew‘s bass has a real presence, with McCafferty’s soft-edged and emotive vocals making this arrangement a true group effort. The best part of this Top 10 hit is the slow, sustained guitar lead, which reaches for the Heavens sonically. I really enjoyed this, the band are supremely tight and the textures varied from crunching hard rock (pretty heavy for 75 I'd guess?) to tender balladry, country (Scotland loves a bit o country!) and excursions into prog /psych territory. Whilst as a band they don't have the out and out virtuosity brandished by the likes of Purple and Zeppelin, they in my mind align more with Uriah Heep in bringing to bear a breadth of other influences fastidiously and imaginatively woven together.

Nazareth: Hair Of The Dog - Album Of The Week Club review

The guitar centred outro just makes me wanna get out on the highway. Stand out tracks are Hair Of The Dog, Changing Times, and Beggars Day. Guilty does nothing for me and Judas doesn't justify its length but the other tracks are more than filler. I had the impression that they were a bar-room boogie band that occasionally did ballads. Even the band are unsure what Dave Roe was trying to achieve with the sleeve art of a bat-like creature with vicious teeth.

The group then supported Deep Purple on tour and caught the ear of bassist and producer Roger Glover, who would go on to produce Nazareth’s next three albums, Razamanaz and Loud n’ Proud in 1973, and Rampant in 1974, each of which built on the group’s growing success. The best way to follow-up the drippy power ballad is with an even more powerful, the riff-driven rocker, “Changin’ Times”. The song proper is like Led Zeppelin on steroids, with different variations on the main riff alternating between the fire-one, high-register a capella vocals. However, what makes this side one closer a classic is the building, closing jam which adds several overdubbed guitars to the unrelenting, throbbing beat, making this a true highlight of the album.

The middle eastern melodies and mood are interesting, but 10 minutes is a bit too much. Rose in the Heather just resolves Beggars Day so perfectly that both songs should just be one long song. And then Changing Times comes back in right after the ballad and gets the party going again.

Beggar’s Day is likely the biggest example - I can absolutely hear Axl singing it. Passionate rockers, heartfelt balladry and a deft hand at choosing and arranging covers. The monster ballad, Love Hurts should just come with it's own bottle of booze. If ever there was a song to drown one's sorrows in it's this one. The space between each individual instrument and even the vocals is pure genius. You can hear each one separately but together they just make the listener feel like they are soaring, adrift on their own dark cloud.

You've gotta love these 'end of the line' success stories, and that's exactly what this album was/is. The power-ballad treatment of another cover song, Boudleaux Bryant’s Love Hurts (left off the European edition until becoming an ‘extra track’ in Eagle Records’ 2001 catalogue revamp) propelled the album’s worldwide sales to two million. You can trust Louder Our experienced team has worked for some of the biggest brands in music.

Stone Rider covered the song for their 2008 studio album, Three Legs of Trouble. Following the success of Hair of the Dog, Nazareth continued to have moderate commercial success, releasing nine more studio albums and a popular live album over the next decade, giving the band a respectable measure of longevity and a healthy catalog. The guitar riff on Changin’ Times doesn’t sound like Black Dog, but the overall feel of the song reminded me of the Zeppelin track and Whiskey Drinking Woman reminds me of Joe Walsh. I wonder if Walsh thought so - his 80s classic The Confessor is rather reminiscent of Please Don’t Judas Me. Red-hot mama, velvet charmer / Time’s come to pay your dues.

The album rocks along just fine, though I probably don’t like it as much as I did 30 years ago. The riffs are okay, the songs are okay, but nothing really jumps out at me as a “must play.” I guess I’ve just found loads of other albums, especially from the 70s, that I like better, which is probably the biggest reason it has stayed in its case for so long. Completely relentless in its attack, the opening track gives us a floor stomping drum intro with that embedded cow bell for extra punch, and it's off to the races from there. After the title track comes Miss Misery, another masterful rocker with some of the rawest vocals of Dan's career. The band had intended it to have a far fruitier moniker, based on its infamously belligerent refrain of, ‘Now you’re messin’ with a son of a bitch’, but couldn’t get it past the censors. It has also been covered by Paul Di'Anno, The Michael Schenker Group and Warrant.

album hair of the dog

Nazareth’s “Hair of the Dog” was about a woman who had taken advantage of men—until she met her match. Originally, the band wanted to use “Son of a Bitch” as the album title but their label pushed back on it. In response, they thought up “Heir of the Dog,” to reference the manipulative woman in the song, before compromising on “Hair of the Dog.” In the song, McCafferty made it clear that he won’t be used. Hair Of The Dog is the sound of a stadium rock band in full flight. The prodigious use of Darrell Sweet’s cowbell wasn’t all that rendered its title track so memorable. Originally written by Boudleaux Bryant, “Love Hurts” features exquisite, Phil Spector-like production with tremendous space provided for each instrument, especially Charlton’s flanged guitar pattern and Sweet’s echo-drenched drums and percussion.

Designing Your Life OverDrive

It’s like the sister of “Feast of the Seven Fishes,” and it’s being published by my publisher, PowerHouse Books. I introduced them, and to my pleasant surprise, they took a chance on her cookbook (which isn’t the type of project they usually do) based on the success of my book. I’ll have two books under my belt, and, who knows, it could be my fourth career. At the Good Housekeeping Institute, our pros in the Media & Tech Lab have been testing photo book makers for more than a decade.

Key Takeaway #4: Good Life Design Principles

Before my grandmother passed away, she had this doctor that she had total faith in. In the pouring rain, we brought him a pot full of thirty stuffed calamari because she wanted to thank him for diagnosing something she had. That was, to her, like bringing him a pot of gold. Over the years, the Daily Catch has brought back stuffed calamari, and there it is on the book’s cover.

In those days, being at home and watching your grandparents was like tuning into YouTube and watching a cooking video. Being away from home for the first time, I began calling my mom for recipes when I would entertain guests. I had met a lot of Italian friends, and I’d have them over for dinner. It was always, “A little bit of this; a little bit of that.” It frustrated me, and that’s when I became more aware of the idea of a recipe. It wasn’t as automatic as my grandparents and mom prepared everything.

You can also opt for one of its 6" x 6" Instant Books, which let you add photos from your phone, tablet or computer in minutes. These mini photo books have only 20 pages, but they're a great place to store goofy candids or Instagram posts you never want to forget. The possibilities are essentially limitless, though the vast array of options could be overwhelming for those getting started.

I have met many people who are able to tell you they have a good job, or that they make lots of money, but they seem to be missing a connection to their work. Who I was, what I believed about myself and my work, and what I was doing did NOT line up together. And that brings me to my first key takeaway from Designing Your Life. Just like the closing of the fish market or your favorite Chinese-American institution or Jewish-American institution, it’s not going to be there forever. How do we transition over the memories of the culinary history we hold so dear?

You can even store your memories in a genuine leather or vegan leather book or pick from five different fabric colors. Although you can't choose the color for a hard- or softcover photo book, you can still customize the shape, size and paper type. Regardless, these photo books still make a superb present that can cost under $10 without compromising on sentimentality. In addition to photo books, you can shop large prints, calendars, cards and metal tabletops. There are fewer size and style options than most services when it comes to photo books, but the other photo product choices make up for the lack of available styles. After all, sometimes it's easier and quicker to have fewer options to choose from if you need to pull something together by a certain date, like a last-minute gift for your boyfriend.

In English and Italian Studies from Connecticut College. One of my favorite parts about Designing Your Life is that it helps reframe what the authors call dysfunctional beliefs. These are unhelpful, distorted, or harmful beliefs that we have that hold us back in our lives. These beliefs can cause serious damage to our emotional health and overall well-being.

Think about yourself for a moment as a “life designer” who works in a “life design lab”. You are being tasked with creating a new product that is a life that reaches maximum fulfillment. "It really depends upon the service and your preference," Rothman says. Although some online custom photo book makers also have an app, it can have limited functionality, be buggy or not as easy to use as the desktop equivalent.

However, having a supportive network that can provide you with a broader perspective is a powerful way to come out on top. A growth mindset is a useful tool that can help you think about the setbacks you face in your life as design challenges. Every time you encounter failure, you have the opportunity to take a design approach to improve for next time. This idea is very similar to the Japanese concept of the ikigai, a tool that I use often in my life coaching to help people connect with their purpose and true calling. Finding alignment between your passions, purpose, and strengths will allow you to find a sense of work life integration. This happens when you align your values in both your work and personal spheres so that your work fits in naturally with your life, rather than your life fitting in around your work.

I put it there because I wanted it to say, “Hello, remember me? I never went to camp; we didn’t have the money for it, so we played on the street in the summer. When I moved away from Brooklyn, I was flying on my own for the first time. Boston has a very distinct neighborhood called the North End. I had lived in Beacon Hill and Brookline, but I felt more at home living in the North End.

One online reviewer wrote, "The fabric cover is beautiful. The photos are amazing quality and look amazing even though the photos were taken on film and therefore are a bit grainy." The overall 4.6-star rating (out of 5) backs up that review. Quality and elevated designs come with a higher price tag, but there are options for $20 or less if you're shopping on a budget. If you don't want the pressure of deciding on a layout, the brand offers a convenient Make My Book option, in which Shutterfly's professional designers curate your photos and design the book for free. Plus, you'll still have the opportunity to put finishing touches on it before it gets printed. Whether you opt for 50 or 800 photos (the maximum), you'll receive an email notification within 24 hours that your book is complete.

Earwigs: A Pest Control Guide for the "Pincher Bug"

how to get rid of earwigs in the house

Even when sprayed directly with a pesticide, they often recover after some time and live on as if nothing had happened. Therefore, for the sake of protecting humans, animals and the environment as a whole, we do not recommend the use of insecticides in the house. Make sure that the trap is sunken into the ground so the top is leveled with the soil. Earwigs are attracted to the odor and will enter the trap willingly. It's much easier to prevent earwigs in your house than it is to get rid of them once they've already taken up residence. "The key to prevention is to remove mulch, leaf debris, splash guards, stones, and landscape timbers from around the structure," Dobrinska says.

How to Plant a Three Sisters Garden: The Original Companion Plants

The spray kills them on contact, and it’s only a matter of minutes before you eradicate them. Earwigs are omnivores, munching on almost anything and everything you have in the yard and even in the home. These opportunistic eaters destroy new plant growth and eat through soft fruits, flowers, and ornamental plants. Earwigs are drawn into the home when it gets cold outside, and they are also attracted to moist areas.

Preemptively discourage earwigs from coming near your plants by removing dead leaves, plant overgrowth, garden waste and anything that can harbor excess moisture. Check your susceptible plants frequently to monitor any signs of a problem to minimise harm. We’ll show you how to get rid of earwigs using repellents, traps, and insecticides and then share some prevention strategies to keep them from returning.

Preventing Future Earwig Infestations

You can identify earwigs by their pair of curved pincers or forceps emerging from the tip of the abdomen. Its name derives from a folklore myth that the earwig crawls into the ears of sleeping people, where it lays eggs. However, there is no proof to the claim, and the insect is mostly harmless to people.

You might have trouble spotting one—not only are they quick movers, they are also nocturnal and tend to hide out during the day when you are tending the garden. They like decaying wood and plant material, and dark, damp spaces. If the crevices around your doorways and windows need help with moisture control, sprinkle food-grade diatomaceous earth around the cracks. This natural desiccant will dehydrate the insects as they walk through the powdery substance. While earwigs may look like one the dangerous insects inside your home because of the pincers protruding from their back, they are actually quite harmless to people.

Earwigs are long, flat, and wriggly little creepy-crawlies with six legs. Some have wings, others do not, but they are most commonly recognized for their menacing-looking cerci or pair of curved pincers emerging from the end of their abdomen. Earwigs are a nocturnal insect that make up the Greek designated Dermaptera order (“skin wings”).

Tips

They congregate during the day because they tend to find the same hiding places. Their nests can number in the thousands, and they aren’t territorial, so they often live together. As a full-time freelance writer and editor, Nicole has been wearing sweatpants to work since way before coronavirus made it cool. Her past and previous clients include Match.com, Pinterest, and HowStuffWorks. Once you’ve resolved your earwig issue, implementing a few preventive measures will minimize the chances of a future infestation.

Can You Trap Slugs With Beer?

Apply other insecticide best practices such as doing a test spray, not spraying in the heat of the day and reapplying the treatment when needed. Since earwigs prefer moist protected areas, they usually congregate in areas with high condensation such as unventilated basements. Earwigs are also attracted to dirt and leaves, so an unfinished basement floor is an ideal environment for these pests.

Since they love to munch on vegetation, you can spray the leaves of your plants or bushes. In fact, you could use this homemade bug spray around the home  to deter most common pests. They won’t like the unpleasant taste of this solution, and will steer clear of it. It is important to note that most earwigs prefer to thrive outside, so knowing how to get rid of earwigs in your yard is important. Inspect the basement, doors and windows, crawlspaces and anywhere else that could compromise the seal between the indoors and outdoors. A caulking gun should be able to get the job done and thwart earwigs in the house.

Burying the trap in the soil ensures that it's placed directly in the path of earwig activity, maximizing its effectiveness. Additionally, burying the trap helps to conceal it from view, maintaining the aesthetic appeal of your garden. As night falls, the earwigs will be drawn to the enticing aroma of soy sauce and venture into the trap. These holes should be large enough for the earwigs to crawl through but small enough to prevent other critters from entering. The earwig's only insect predator in North America is the tachinid fly.

There is no scientific basis for claims about earwigs seeking out human ears and causing insanity or other damage. However, emergency rooms often see patients who arrive with a bug in their ear, so the presence of any small bug in the ear canal is not unique to the earwig. Clean the affected room thoroughly, illuminate and heat it for a long period of time, the insects will leave on their own. DE does lose its effectiveness when wet, so try to time your application long after your plants have been watered. After rain or irrigation washes it away, DE will once again need to be applied to continue to work. Check your yard for leaking spigots, pipes, hoses, and other fixtures that are dripping water, and clean out gutters and drain pipes where earwigs are likely to take shelter.

So we polled a pest-pro to find out how to get them out of your house fast. Outdoors, your yard may provide a substantial food source for these insects, and in large numbers they can be destructive garden pests. Earwigs are active at night, so they typically spend the daylight hours in hiding places like wood piles, mulch, and crevices in rocks. If your lawn has a lot of these features, plus plenty of plant debris and small insects to snack on, it’s ideal for an earwig infestation. Outdoors, you can find them in organic locations such as mulch, dead leaves, stones, or logs.

However, if they become destructive to your plants, or if they infest your home, try the following methods to get rid of them. A newspaper, magazine, or supermarket flyer is a cozy hiding place for an earwig. Simply roll an old periodical into a tube, securing it with a piece of tape or rubber band if necessary, and place it in your garden before you retire for the evening. Dampen the newspaper with your hose or watering can to create a particularly tempting trap.

13 Best Rhine River Cruises to Book Today

rhine river day cruise

You’ll travel through the Drachenfels mountains, see the relaxing beauty of the waterway and the small towns, and make a few stops along the way. AmaWaterways offers themed wine itineraries on the Rhine with enhanced epicurean experiences included in the fare. These sailings are accompanied by a professional wine host who leads onboard tastings and discussions and accompanies trips to local wineries and vineyards. But it's Tauck's fully-inclusive rates that really help make this line a great choice for luxury seekers. Exclusive events for Rhine River passengers include a special reception, dinner and entertainment at the historic Rheingau wine estate overlooking the river.

Best Rhine River Cruise for Active Travelers: Avalon Waterways

On this culture-rich itinerary you will travel through four contrasting countries -- the Netherlands, Germany, Austria and Hungary -- and, like all Viking river cruises, only have to pack and unpack once. This was the first time my husband and I have booked travel through Gate 1. It was at the recommendation of our dear friends, who traveled with you previously and said you were the best. We just completed a Rhine River cruise, and it was spectacular and life-changing! We had never been on a river cruise before, and we thought it would be an extra special way to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary.

Best Rhine River Cruise for Romantics: Uniworld Boutique River Cruise Collection

The town has a few museums (torture, musical boxes) and it is fun taking the small cable car up the hill to the huge Niederwald Monument for super views and a pleasant walk back to the Rhine through vineyards. A lesser-known stop on the Rhine on this Viking river cruise is Speyer. A former Roman settlement, it's one of Germany's oldest towns and noted for is large Romanesque-style cathedral and rich Jewish heritage with a traditional bathhouse dating back to 1128.

You can also buy local wines and liquors at Rhine-Hotel Bacharach. I was particularly intrigued by the Gothic ruins of a massive chapel, the Wernerkapelle, which lays on the way to the castle Burg Stahleck. For me, Bacharach village is the best place to enjoy the (wine) Romantic of the Rhine river.

I recommend to wander through its narrow streets and enjoy the terraces on the Rhine promenade. I also loved to explore the particularly well-maintained fortification walls. The hotel is family-run since 3 generations and lays on the fortification wall. Mr. Stüber, manager and cook at Rhein-Hotel Bacharach will serve you German cuisine with a modern touch. Their entire menu is based on the concept of “Slow food” including regional and seasonal products.

Most Rhine pleasure boat excursion cruises in this region are from Bonn to Linz and back. The landscape here includes the Siebengebirge that are somewhat similar to the steep Loreley Valley further upstream. The cruise also goes past many castles and ruins including the Drachenfels, Rolandsbogen, and the remains of the bridge at Remagen.

Lunch in Cologne

On arrival in Basel we made a short walk from the town centre along the river to meet our Lueftner Cruise ship, the Amadeus Princess. Since check in was at 4pm, we dropped our bags on board and wandered back along the river bank towards the centre of town. If you’re considering a Rhine River Cruise, the Rhine cruise map should give you a good feel for the places you might visit and things to enjoy. Click on the white dots to see more photos of the places we visited or read more about our trip below and at the Online Travel Journal. It’s a big question, but one that doesn’t have a straightforward answer since you could be traveling in either direction. We encourage you to check out the attractions and destinations offered and then plan your journey to be out of your stateroom so you can see everything along the main rivers here.

Rhine River all-day or shorter pleasure boat cruises are generally available from April (or late March if Easter is early) to the end of October. The high season is from late April to early October when more Rhine cruises are operated. A standout feature on the ships is the glass-enclosed swimming pool which converts to a movie theater at night (complete with popcorn). Emerald Cruises also has activity managers that coordinate the shore tours and arrange daytime and evening programs.

The bartender Marius was so kind, fun and remembered everything. The chef threw down some awesome meals and exposed us to local flavors. After a visit to the charming town of Rüdesheim, we cruised through the romantic Middle Rhine Valley, past castles and vineyards, arriving at Koblenz. They're a great introduction to the region and will leave you wanting to come back for more. Cruises include Viking's Rhine Getaway, which runs between Amsterdam and Basel and sails through captivating landscapes where Dutch windmills and tulip fields make way for German castles and vines. Our trip was absolutely wonderful and definitely up to the high Gate-1 standards. Our tour managers were excellent particularly Betti who was efficient, caring, and very professional. More than that she was fun to be on a trip with, totally positive outlook no matter what.

Adrien went above and beyond to help us with the challenges of navigating in foreign places. In addition to being exceptionally competent at her job, she was pleasant, approachable and it was just a delight to be in her company.

Had missed seeing the Rezidence in Wurzburg last time we were there, so really wanted to see the inside and was not disappointed. Could not believe Frankfurt's Christmas Market went on forever and we thought it was larger than Nuremburg's (which we had been to several times before). Overall, it definitely was a great vacation and service aboard the Monarch Governess was excellent. Other than losing a gold earring trying on hats, it was a wonderful vacation. Although there were plenty of pleasant cafes along the river frontage, we decided on lunch at one of the many beer halls around the Heumarkt where a street market was just setting up.

A morning tour of Speyer

A tour of Koblenz

Rhine River all-day or shorter pleasure boat cruises are generally available from April (or late March if Easter is early) to the end of October. The high season is from late April to early October when more Rhine cruises are operated. A standout feature on the ships is the glass-enclosed swimming pool which converts to a movie theater at night (complete with popcorn). Emerald Cruises also has activity managers that coordinate the shore tours and arrange daytime and evening programs.

The river cruise operator also offers a series of “discovery” excursions, hands-on, interactive experiences that often focus on culture and cuisine. The following includes the most popular stops on Rhine River day cruises. Not all boats stop at all ports and some lines are faster than others. Times indicated here are those of the largest Rhine day cruise boat line, Köln-Düsseldorfer (KD). Most cruise lines now also accept online ticket purchases but several still prefer to sell tickets directly at the quay or on board cruise boats.

The Doubs valley and Burgundy (port-to-port cruise)

I recommend to wander through its narrow streets and enjoy the terraces on the Rhine promenade. I also loved to explore the particularly well-maintained fortification walls. The hotel is family-run since 3 generations and lays on the fortification wall. Mr. Stüber, manager and cook at Rhein-Hotel Bacharach will serve you German cuisine with a modern touch. Their entire menu is based on the concept of “Slow food” including regional and seasonal products.

You can also enjoy the view from the Lounge with floor-to-ceiling windows perfect for watching the changing landscape. The 40-mile Upper Middle Rhine Valley is a UNESCO World Heritage site and the banks are lined with more than 40 hilltop fortresses and lush vineyards. Your program director will highlight many points of interest, including the legendary 443-foot Lorelei Rock where a siren is said to have lured passing sailors to their doom with her haunting songs. My husband and I took a winter cruise down the Rhine. It was the first time for both of us.

Full Mainz, or even Koblenz, to Cologne day cruises are no longer possible on the standard schedule and timetables. For long cruises, the more sensible choice is by train to Koblenz and then to cruise to Rüdesheim / Bingen (or in the reverse order). I did a Viking Danube cruise earlier this year and just finished my price comparison.

A fabulous exploration of the history and charm of this region, AmaWaterways offers an exciting trip. Along this particular cruise (there are several options to choose from), you’ll get to see the historic vineyards and fairytale castles along the Rhine River. The best River Rhine cruises take you on a journey through history, into modern towns, and through a range of cultures along this European river. It’s a fabulous way to spend a few hours or days touring Europe. One of the most memorable day trips we took while living in Germany was for our anniversary, a cruise on the Rhine River.

Daniele and Adrien were a perfect match and it was obvious that they enjoyed working together. The Monarch Queen was clean and the accommodations were wonderful. The meals were delicious, beautifully presented and choices were great. The Maitre'd, Marius Miren, could always be found checking to make sure each of us enjoyed our meals. The breakfast buffet provided a variety of delicious choices to start our day. Every member of the wait staff was pleasant and attentive to details. They ,too, worked hard to make meal time a nice experience. This trip has convinced us to travel abroad more and to travel with Gate 1.Thank you for providing us with the opportunity to make such great memories.

It's a relaxing and convenient way to experience Europe while enjoying the comfort of a deluxe ship. However, before making the decision to reserve your vacation, please be aware of potential conditions which may impact your cruise. While most of the time river cruises operate exactly as planned, weather conditions may result in high or low water levels which impact a ship's itinerary and, on occasion, render a ship unable to sail at all. On very rare occasions, other events such as heavy fog, a damaged lock, or an incapacitated vessel blocking the river, may impact a sailing. In the event that a cruise is partially or completely impacted, the itinerary will be operated by deluxe motor coach, accompanied by a Tour Manager, with overnights in hotels.
